Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Makes Tone-Deaf Joke About Arrest of DE Sam Williams

Three days after defensive lineman Sam Williams was arrested on multiple charges—including felony possession of a controlled substance—Cowboys owner Jerry Jones addressed the issue to reporters on Wednesday, making a joke about the situation in the process.

Williams was charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon, per ESPN’s Todd Archer, and participated in team practice on Tuesday. This follows an incident last December in which Williams crashed his car and was cited for misdemeanor reckless driving. Police said he was driving nearly 100 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone and was weaving through traffic when the crash occurred.

Jones took an opportunity to make light of his latest arrest by noting his far slower speed in comparison to last year’s crash.

“First of all, I’m seeing that he is, which is more often the case than not, this sounds a little hollow, but he is maturing. And he is. What was he going 66 miles per hour [when he was arrested this year]? So, he’s 34 miles an hour less this year,” Jones said, per The Athletic‘s Jon Machota. “98 to 66, that’s improvement. We’ll keep working. We’ll get it down.”

Williams’ car was totaled in the December crash, and neither he nor the driver of the other car were seriously injured. Jones said that he doesn’t anticipate Sunday’s arrest will have an impact on Williams’ availability for this upcoming season.
