Cardinals Continue Trade Spree, Acquire QB Joshua Dobbs From Browns
After a quiet few months, the Cardinals are reportedly closing in on their third trade in the last 12 hours after reaching an agreement to acquire Browns quarterback Joshua Dobbs, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Arizona landed Dobbs, a sixth-year pro, and a 2024 seventh-round pick from Cleveland on Thursday in exchange for a ’24 fifth-round pick, according to Pelissero. Dobbs’s arrival will give the Cards five active QBs on their roster, with the team still looking for a starter to replace injured star Kyler Murray (torn ACL).
With Week 1 quickly approaching, the curiously-timed deal continues an unexpected trade spree for the Cardinals, who dealt linebacker Isaiah Simmons to the Giants, and offensive tackle Josh Jones to the Texans earlier in the day.
While the move may seem largely inconsequential for the Browns, the Cardinals now find themselves with another potential QB1 in the mix, given Dobbs’s experience.
Dobbs, a 2017 fourth-round pick out of Tennessee, won’t have much time to adjust in Arizona as the 28-year-old will look to compete right away with veterans Colt McCoy, who’s likely in line to start, Jeff Driskel and David Blough, and rookie Clayton Tune for reps ahead of the opener on Sept. 10.
Last season, Dobbs earned his first starts in eight career games in his lone year with the Titans, going 0–2 in Weeks 17 and 18 with 411 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He appeared in one preseason game for the Browns on Aug. 11, and logged 77 yards and an INT in a 17-15 loss to the Commanders.
