Jim Harbaugh, Chargers Could Agree on Contract Offer Soon, per Report

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh could become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers “in the near future,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported on Tuesday.

The college coach has recently interviewed with the Chargers and the Atlanta Falcons. Harbaugh is expected to meet with the Chargers again on Tuesday.

Garafolo reported that the Chargers have made an offer to Harbaugh. The team is also in the process of hiring a new general manager and, per the report, the two sides are at the point where they will discuss the coaching staff that would work alongside Harbaugh.

“My understanding is that it’s an extremely strong offer that they have made to him financially,” Garafolo said on The Insiders. “So, this feels like advancing to the point where if everybody’s comfortable with a lot of the principle factors at play, that this team could move on Jim Harbaugh and try to get him under contract here in the near future.”

Harbaugh is coming off a national title with the Wolverines. He’s interviewed with NFL teams in previous years, but this year looks like it may mark his official return to the league after he coached the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to ’14.

The Chargers fired coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco on Dec. 15. Los Angeles went 5–12 this season.
