Brian Urlacher Chooses Side in Bears’ Justin Fields-Caleb Williams QB Debate
At the risk of sounding like a Star Wars opening crawl, it is a time of crisis in Chicago sports.
In the 2020s—a decade that is nearly half over—the Windy City's five Big Four sports teams have combined for six playoff appearances. Four of those took place during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020; the Chicago Sky's 2021 WNBA title has been the city's sole saving grace.
This offseason, the Chicago Bears—holders of the first pick in the NFL draft—have a potentially franchise-altering decision to make. Everyone in Chicago has an opinion on whether the Bears should roll with quarterback Justin Fields or draft a new signal-caller, such as USC quarterback Caleb Williams.
On Friday, Hall of Fame former Chicago linebacker Brian Urlacher weighed in on the debate.
"I think at this point if people are still asking if Justin is the guy, he's probably not the guy," Urlacher told Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team. "Right? Three years there and they're still saying, 'Hey, is he gonna be our guy?'"
In 40 career games, Fields has thrown 40 touchdowns against 30 interceptions. He has yet to take the Bears to the postseason, where they have not been since '20.
"There's a pretty good player sitting there as well—at least he was in college—in Caleb Williams," Urlacher said. "In my opinion, they probably have to draft a kid."
