Chiefs, Steve Spagnuolo Agree to Contract Extension

Three days after the Kansas City Chiefs’ 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, the NFL champions have locked up one of the victory’s key architects.

The Chiefs have signed defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to a contract extension, the team announced Wednesday morning.

Spagnuolo, 64, has served as Kansas City’s defensive coordinator since 2019.

Over his five-year tenure, the Chiefs’ defense gradually has evolved into one of the most feared units in the league. In 2023, Kansas City finished second in in the NFL in scoring defense and total defense—the first time the Chiefs finished in the top two in both categories since 1995.

A four-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants (once) and Chiefs (three times), Spagnuolo is the only coach to win football’s biggest prize as a coordinator with two different teams.

In addition to his coordinator work, Spagnuolo coached the St. Louis Rams from 2009-11 and the Giants on an interim basis in 2017.
