Jameis Winston Hints at Saints Departure as He Seeks Starting QB Job

Jameis Winston’s career hasn’t gone as expected for a former No. 1 pick, as he failed to live up to expectations with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, he settled into a solid role with the New Orleans Saints, acting as a backup quarterback each season since 2020.

Now, it seems as though Winston wants a shot to start for a team again. The veteran told Kyle T. Mosley of Fan Nation’s Saints News Network that he wants to try and find a starting job somewhere next season.

“My goal is to be, and my desire is to be, a Super Bowl-winning starting quarterback in this league,” Winston said. “Right now, that doesn’t look like a very clear picture with the New Orleans Saints.”

Winston played a total of four seasons for the Saints, playing in 21 games in that span but starting just 10. The veteran accumulated 2,367 passing yards for New Orleans, throwing 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Winston’s desire to start likely won’t come in New Orleans, as the Saints are committed to Derek Carr for at least next season. However, Winston said he will always appreciate Saints fans for the way they embraced him.

“It’s such a love for the city,” he said. “I just admire the individuals. And I admire the culture and the integrity that this city possesses.”

Winston will hit free agency next month, as teams with quarterback vacancies will have a chance explore him as a starter option.
