Only two months after retiring from the NFL, former New England Patriots wide receiver Matthew Slater will return back to the team, this time working as an advisor under new coach Jerod Mayo's leadership, ESPN's Mike Reiss reported on Sunday.

Slater and Mayo both played on the Patriots together after being drafted in the 2008 class. Slater played his entire career in New England until after the 2023 season, while Mayo announced his retirement in February of 2016 after eight seasons with the Patriots.

Mayo will use Slater as his “right-hand man," Reiss reported. Slater will also be helping with "people development." It should be an easy adjustment for the duo as they are going from being teammates to members of the coaching staff together.

Slater finished his NFL career with three Super Bowl titles, 10 Pro Bowl honors and five first-team All-Pro selections. He was also named to the Patriots' All-Dynasty and All-2010s teams.
