49ers Draft Edge Rusher in Connor Orr's Mock Draft

Robinson is a good guess for the 49ers' first pick, because they love drafting defensive linemen in Round 1. But I would be disappointed if Robinson were the selection for a few reasons.

The NFL Draft is two days away and the predictions for the 49ers' first-round pick remain all over the place.

The latest prediction comes from Sports Illustrated's Connor Orr, who projects the 49ers to take Penn State defensive end Chop Robinson with pick no. 31.

"The 49ers are in a good spot here, able to pivot to the wide receiver position, defensive line or offensive line. This receiver class is deep enough to get Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch some value later on, and their offensive line coaching staff is good enough to find some gems later in the draft, too. Robinson gives the team more rotational pass-rush strength after the 49ers tried to aggressively patch it together last year."

Robinson is a good guess for the 49ers' first pick, because they love drafting defensive linemen in Round 1. But I would be disappointed if Robinson were the selection for a few reasons.

First, he's a pass rusher who recorded just 11.5 sacks in three college seasons. That's not ideal. In addition, the 49ers don't really need another pass rusher. They added Leonard Floyd, Maliek Collins and Yetur Gross-Matos in free agency. What they really need is run defense, and they don't need to address that in Round 1.

I'd rather see the 49ers trade up for pick no. 31 and take an offensive tackle such as Troy Fautanu, who falls to pick no. 26 in Orr's mock draft. Failing a trade-up, I'd like to see the 49ers trade down and out of Round 1 entirely.

Staying at 31 is the last option.
