49ers Sign Tashaun Gipson to One Year $2.9 Million Contract

In this story:
The 49ers just re-signed one of their most underrated players.
Free safety Tashaun Gipson received a one-year $2.9 million contract extension from the 49ers today, according to reports. Gispon, 32, played all 17 regular season games for the 49ers last season and intercepted a whopping five passes while allowing a passer rating of just 63.8.
Gipson is a journeyman who has bounced around the league, but everywhere he has gone, he has produced. He has 32 interceptions in his career, which means he's a bargain for the 49ers. And if we're being honest, he's their best safety, not Talanoa Hufanga, who was an All Pro last season. And that's no disrespect to Hufanga -- he deserved to be an All Pro. But so did Gipson. He was more consistent and gave up far fewer big plays and touchdowns.
Gipson's deal might indicate the 49ers don't plan to re-sign veteran Jimmie Ward, unless they want to give him $10 million to $12 million to play nickelback, which is possible -- he certainly would be worth it. But it seems like the 49ers are looking for bargains in the secondary. Gipson definitely is a bargain. Ward will not be -- he will go to the highest bidder.
Also, Emmanuel Moseley will not be a bargain -- it's possible he'll sign elsewhere and the 49ers will replace him with Deommodore Lenoir, who finished last season strong after struggling initially.
Free agency starts this Wednesday, and the legal tampering period starts on Monday. Stay tuned.
