Maliek Collins Explains His Fit in the 49ers' Wide 9 Defense

"I actually played in the same system last year under DeMeco Ryans, and you see how that bolstered that team in Houston."

Maliek Collins just spoke to the Bay Area media for the first time as a member of the 49ers. Here's what he said about his fit in the 49ers defense.

Q: What do you like about the Wide 9 and why is it a good fit for you?

COLLINS: "The way it sets edges and the way it allows the interior to get off and redirect and get down the line and make a tackle for loss, I think it's great. I actually played in the same system last year under DeMeco Ryans, and you see how that bolstered that team in Houston. I'm excited to come to the place that has had the most success in it lately."

Q: Why do you want to play for Kris Kocurek?

COLLINS: "His passion that he brings to the game. How he's all about being the most productive defensive line, and he wants to be No. 1 in everything. That's something I want to contribute to. I'm excited to be coached and coached hard. It couldn't be a better situation. A storied franchise like this at this point of my career, I'm excited."

Q: What is it about their style of play that lines up with your style of play?

COLLINS: "It's an attack front, which is something I'm very fond of. Just coming in and adding to the success that's already been had. This is a team that was in the Super Bowl last year and in 2019. Just seeing that success, the NFC Championships and all that, I just want to come in and help bridge that gap and get us over the hump."
