49ers @ Browns Week 6 Live Blog

In this story:
This is the live blog for the San Francisco 49ers' Week 6 road game against the Cleveland Browns. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.
7:50 Randy Gregory will play today according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 49ers traded for Gregory just before last week's game against the Dallas Cowboys but didn't play him, so this will be his debut with the 49ers. And it will be interesting to see how they use him. Will he start? Will he come off the bench and play on third downs? Or will he be a mere reserve? I wouldn't be surprised if he starts. The other options are Drake Jackson and Clelin Ferrell who have been giving the 49ers next to nothing the past few games. That's why the 49ers traded for Gregory in the first place -- Jackson and Ferrell aren't producing. That, and Trent Williams recommended Gregory to the coaching staff. Williams faced Gregory in the 2021 playoffs when the 49ers faced the Cowboys in Dallas, and Williams told 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster that Gregory is one of the best edge rushers he's faced. Quite the seal of approval. Let's see if Williams is right about Gregory. He hasn't produced much the past two seasons with the Denver Broncos -- that's why they practically gave him away to the 49ers. But he was playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. Now he'll be playing defensive end in a 4-3 defense and he'll be surrounded by three pass rushers who are better than him. If he's got anything left in the tank, he should flourish.
8:37 Dre Greenlaw officially is inactive. So are Brayden Willis, Ty Davis-Price, Jalen Graham, Kalia Davis, Matt Pryor and Brandon Allen.
10:02 I predict the 49ers will win 24-3.
10:03 The Browns win the toss and defer. The 49ers get the ball first.
FIRST QUARTER
10:08 On 2nd and 9 from the Browns 13, Brock Purdy flips the ball backhand to Christian McCaffrey, who trots into the end zone for the touchdown. That was Purdy's only pass on the drive -- a screen right at Myles Garrett. Beautiful play call by Kyle Shanahan. The Browns committed not one but two 15-yard penalties on McCaffrey during that drive -- a late hit out of bounds and a facemask.
49ers 7, Browns 0.
10:17 On 2nd and 4 from the 49ers 43, Fred Warner intercepts P.J. Walker and returns it to the 49ers 26. Warner is the best coverage linebacker I've ever seen.
10:20 First play of the drive, McCaffrey loses 8 on a screen pass. Then George Kittle commits a false start. Then on 3rd and 23, Deebo Samuel runs for just three yards. Then Jake Moody attempts a 54-yard field goal and misses wide left. What a missed opportunity for the 49ers.
10:32 On 1st and 10 from the 49ers 32, Walker throws a screen pass to tight end David Njoku, but the play doesn't count because the Browns were flagged for holding. Then a few plays later, the Browns miss a 47-yard field goal wide left. You can tell the wind is swirling in Cleveland.
10:37 Trent Williams just got his right leg rolled up on. It was 2nd and 8 from the 49ers 39 and he went down while Purdy scrambled for five yards. Williams walks slowly off the field. His replacement is Jaylon Moore.
10:40 Next play, Spencer Burford commits a 10-yard hands-to-the-face penalty. Then on 3rd and 13 from the 49ers 34, Purdy throws downfield to Brandon Aiyuk, who drops the ball. Good pass by Purdy who took a shot while he released the ball. Aiyuk should have caught that.
10:41 Deebo Samuel also got injured during that drive. He's going into the locker room.
10:42 Ambry Thomas commits a facemask penalty during the punt.
SECOND QUARTER
10:53 On 3rd and 12 from the Browns 42, Walker checks down the Elijah Moore for six yards and the Browns punt. The 49ers get the ball at their 17.
10:54 Trent Williams is back on the field. Samuel is not. He's questionable to return with a shoulder injury.
11:01 On 3rd and 7 from the Browns 11, Purdy throws a short pass over the middle to McCaffrey who gains only four yards. So Jake Moody attempts a 25-yard field goal and drills it.
49ers 10, Browns 0.
11:08 2nd and 10 from the Browns 17, Deommodore Lenoir falls down at the line of scrimmage and gives up a 58-yard catch to Amari Cooper. Then on 3rd and 1 from the 49ers 16, the Browns line up like they're going to do a quarterback sneak, but instead Walker flips the ball to Kareem Hunt who runs into the end zone untouched. Terrible series for the 49ers who are making lots of self-inflicted errors.
49ers 10, Browns 7.
11:26 On 2nd and 13 from the Browns 46, Purdy overthrows a wide open McCaffrey deep down the field. A few plays later, the 49ers are flagged for a delay of game. Then on 3rd and 15 from the Browns 37, the ball slips out of Purdy's hand and he goes to throw. Fortunately for the 49ers, he recovers. Then the 49ers punt. They've been extremely sloppy on both sides of the ball since the first drive. The Browns will take over at their 9.
11:36 The Browns commit an intentional grounding penalty that looks like a fumble. Bad call. The Browns eventually punt with 21 seconds left.
11:37 Purdy takes a knee.
THIRD QUARTER
11:53 Deebo Samuel is out with a shoulder injury.
11:57 On 3rd and 7 from the Browns 31, Charvarius Ward gives up a 27-yard catch to Amari Cooper. That puts the Browns in field goal range, where they eventually make a 42-yard field goal to tie the game.
49ers 10, Browns 10.
12:03 First play of the drive, Purdy attempts a throw over the middle to Aiyuk and nearly gets intercepted by the middle linebacker. Two plays later on 3rd and 10, Aiyuk attempts another throw to Aiyuk but leaves it high and behind him and gets intercepted by Martin Emerson. Purdy is having a bad game. The Browns get the ball at the 49ers 38.
12:10 On 3rd and 22, Randy Gregory stunts to the inside and sacks Walker. Gregory officially is the 49ers' second-best edge rusher. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 20.
12:14 First play of the drive, Purdy gets sacked. Then the 49ers go three and out. Christian McCaffrey is on the sideline with what appears to be a back or rib injury. After the punt, the Browns get the ball at the 49ers 45-yard line following a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by Shemar Jean-Charles for going out of bounds, coming back onto the field of play and being the first to make the tackle.
12:21 On 3rd and 3 from the 49ers 27, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles tips away a pass. Then the Browns make a 46-yard field goal. And the Browns are actually winning. Let's see how the 49ers respond.
49ers 10, Browns 13.
12:27 The 49ers start this series with a holding penalty by Trent Williams and a false start by Aaron Banks. Then they go 3 and out. During the drive, McCaffrey carried the ball one time, took a hit and went to the locker room to get checked for an injury.
FOURTH QUARTER
12:31 The Browns start from their 34.
12:35 The Browns go 3 and out. The 49ers get the ball at their 18.
12:41 McCaffrey has left the game with an oblique injury. On 3rd and 10, Purdy overthrows an open Aiyuk, and the 49ers go 3 and out for the third time in a row. The 49ers need Purdy to step up, but he has only 73 passing yards in this game. It's by far the worst game of his career. But he still has time to bounce back. The Browns take over at their 28.
12:44 On 2nd and 16 from the Browns 22, Deommodore Lenoir intercepts a pass intended for Amari Cooper and returns it to the Browns 8-yard line. That's the break the 49ers needed.
12:46 On 1st and goal from the 8, Jordan Mason takes a toss to the left and powers his way into the end zone. He just revived the 49ers. He's so much better than Elijah Mitchell.
49ers 17, Browns 13.
1:02 On 3rd and 10 from the 49ers 21, Nick Bosa sacks Walker for a loss of 11. Then the Browns make a 50-yard field goal with 3:21 left.
49ers 17, Browns 16.
1:07 First play of the drive, Purdy gets flagged for intentional grounding. Then on 3rd and 9, Purdy scrambles away from pressure and throws the ball away. The 49ers passed on all three plays. After the punt, the Browns take over at their 26.\
1:20 The Browns make a field goal with 1:20 left and take a two-point lead. They drove the field thanks to two questionable calls on Tashaun Gipson and Charvarius Ward. Still, this game never should have been so close. The 49ers have one timeout left and they need a field goal.
49ers 17, Browns 19.
1:29 Jake Moody misses a 41-yard field goal attempt wide right and the 49ers will lose. Stay tuned for their grades.
