49ers vs. Chargers Sunday Night Week 10 Live Blog

In this story:
SANTA CLARA -- This is the live blog for the San Francisco 49ers' Week 10 Sunday night game against the Los Angeles Chargers. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.
4:00 Here are the 49ers' inactives: Arik Armstead, Samson Ebukam, Ty Davis-Price, Curtis Robinson, Nick Zakelj and Kemoko Turay.
4:01 Here are the Chargers' inactives: Easton Stick, Dustin Hopkins, Keenan Allen, Trey Pipkins III, Mike Williams, Keelan Doss and Chris Rumph II.
4:02 The Seahawks lost to the Buccaneers this morning, which means the 49ers would be just a half game out of first place if they win tonight, as they should. The Seahawks scored just 16 points even though quarterback Geno Smith played well (minus a fumble in the second half). The key to beating the Seahawks clearly is shutting down Kenneth Walker, their rookie running back. Tampa Bay limited him to just 17 rushing yards and zero touchdowns on 10 carries, and that was checkmate. In Week 2, the 49ers held Walker to just 10 rushing yards on four carries, but that was in Santa Clara, and that was when the 49ers had Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw. It's unclear whether those two will play when the 49ers face the Seahawks in Seattle later this season. But even if the Seahawks win that game, the 49ers should win the NFC West. The Seahawks are not legitimate contenders. And neither are the Buccaneers, although their defense is good and their rookie running back, Rachaad White, had an excellent game today.
5:15 The 49ers win the toss and defer until the second half, so the Chargers will get the ball first.
FIRST QUARTER
5:27 On 1st and 10 from the 49ers 32, Justin Herbert throws a 32-yard touchdown pass to a wide open DeAndre Carter, who beat Talanoa Hufanga. Herbert completed all four of his passes on that drive. You'd think the Chargers were the team coming off a bye.
49ers 0, Chargers 7.
5:39 On 3rd and goal from the 2, Kyle Shanahan calls a run between the tackles for Christian McCaffrey, who gains no yards. Not a particularly creative play call by The Genius. On fourth down, Robbie Gould makes a 20-yard field goal. Not a particularly gutsy call by The Genius. He should have gone for the touchdown.
49ers 3, Chargers 7.
5:48 On 3rd and 3 from the 49ers 49, Herbert throws behind a wide open Joshua Palmer. Dre Greenlaw got beat. The 49ers have played terrible defense so far. After the punt and fair catch, the 49ers take over at their 17.
5:52 First play of the drive, Brandon Aiyuk catches a long pass over the middle, spins, gets decked by a defender he doesn't see, fumbles and the Chargers recover at the 49ers 32.
SECOND QUARTER
5:57 On 3rd and 7 from the 49ers 29, Herbert overthrows Palmer deep in the end zone. He had a step on Deommodore Lenoir and Talanoa Hufanga. Next play, the Chargers make a 47-yard field goal.
49ers 3, Chargers 10.
6:04 On 3rd and 5 from the 49ers 30, Garoppolo scrambles to his right and throws an incomplete pass intended for McCaffrey, and the 49ers go 3 and out. Mike McGlinchey also got flagged for a hold on the play but the Chargers declined the penalty. After the penalty, the Chargers take over at their 25.
6:09 On 3rd and 11 from the Chargers 24, Herbert checks down for five yards and the Chargers go 3 and out. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 24.
6:13 On 3rd and 2 from the 49ers 31, Garoppolo scrambles for two yards. Then the 49ers get their punt blocked. The Chargers take over at the 49ers 46.
6:19 On 3rd and goal from the 8, Herbert checks down to Ekeler for one yard, and the Chargers make a 25-yard field goal. Jimmie Ward gave up a 33-yard catch to DeAndre Carter during the drive, and Chargers tight end Tre' McKitty dropped a walk-in touchdown. He was wide open. The 49ers secondary is getting torched, but it's still a game.
49ers 3, Chargers 13.
6:33 On 3rd and goal from the 1, Garoppolo sneaks into the end zone for the touchdown. That was a crucial drive. Garoppolo made two nice downfield throws.
49ers 10, Chargers 13.
6:48 Dre Greenlaw just got kicked out of the game for hitting Herbert in the head at the end of a scramble. Now Chase Daniel is the Chargers quarterback.
6:51 On 3rd and 10 from the 49ers 20, Jordan Willis sacks Daniel. The Chargers now will attempt a 40-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half.
6:52 The field goal is good.
49ers 10, Chargers 16.
THIRD QUARTER
7:13 On 3rd and goal from the 8, Aiyuk lets a potential touchdown pass bounce off his chest. He was wide open in the end zone. Next play, Robbie Gould makes a 26-yard field goal.
49ers 13, Chargers 16.
7:23 On 3rd and 8 from the 49ers 44, DeMeco Ryans calls a blitz for the second play in a row, and Herbert throws the ball away for the second play in a row. Good aggressive calls by Ryans to get the defense off the field. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 20.
7:30 On 1st and 10 from the 49ers 34, Garoppolo play fakes, turns around and gets sacked by Khalil Mack for a 10-yard loss. Three plays later, the 49ers punt on 4th and 4. After the punt, the Chargers take over at their 21. The 49ers need to take the lead before the 49ers quarter, because they're terrible at coming from behind late in games.
7:37 On 3rd and 8 from the Chargers 34, Herbert checks down to Richard Rodgers for three yards, and the third quarter ends.
FOURTH QUARTER
7:40 After a punt and a fair catch, the 49ers take over at their 23.
7:52 On 3rd and 10 from the 49ers 26, the Chargers blitz and Garoppolo quickly hits Aiyuk over the middle for 24 yards. Next play, McCaffrey bounces into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown run.
7:53 Gould misses the extra point.
49ers 19, Chargers 16.
7:59 First play of the drive is a shovel pass to Carter running a jet sweep and he loses six yards after running into Bosa. Then the Chargers go 3 and out. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 30.
8:07 On 3rd and 13 from the Chargers 49, Garoppolo checks down to Samuel, who gains 8 yards. After the punt, the Chargers take over at their 1 with 2:03 left.
8:18 The Chargers turn it over on downs and the 49ers kick a field goal with 1:00 left.
49ers 22, Chargers 16.
8:26 The 49ers win. Stay tuned for their grades.
