Lou Anarumo Hints at Bengals Adding Veteran Safety in Free Agency

Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell both agreed to deals with other teams on Monday.

CINCINNATI — The Bengals lost both of their starting safeties in free agency on Monday. Jessie Bates agreed to sign a 4-year, $64.02 million contract with the Falcons and Vonn Bell is headed to the Panthers on a 3-year, $22 million contract.

"You take a minute you digest it and then you realize, 'OK, this is the reality of it,'" Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo said. "And we all have to move on. That's just how it is. I think we'll make the right decisions and move on to next year."

The Bengals have evaluated plenty of free agent safeties and are hoping to land a veteran to play alongside Dax Hill.

"There’s a handful of guys that I think we can work through and hopefully get one that fits us best," Anarumo said. "We’ve got a good feel for them, for sure. It always goes back to you watch all these guys in the draft. You keep good notes. I can go back to my draft notes on what I thought on a guy. Has he done better than I thought? Not as good? Oh, I really didn’t like this and it’s still showing up or he’s gotten better at this? So you always refer back to that. Having been in the league for a while, it helps because you know these guys. You know what they can and can’t do, for the most part."

Don't be surprised if the Bengals agree to terms with a veteran safety in the coming days.
