Can the Buffalo Bills find more balance on offense this season?

That's the burning question after Josh Allen accounted for 5,045 of Buffalo's 6,361 yards on offense and 42 of the team's 50 touchdowns last season. Allen's total yards only trailed that of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

If the Bills are going to ease that burden, they'll need someone in the running game to step up. All signs point to James Cook having to be that guy, and offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey has been pleased with what he's seen out of the second-year running back.

"He just continues to grow," Dorsey said. "It's some of those little detail things whether it's pressing a hole, a concept or a situation, short yardage, goal line that maybe he wasn't in, in the past."

Cook was third on the team with 507 rushing yards and second in average yards per carry (5.7) among players with at least 10 carries. Devin Singletary led the Bills with 819 rushing yards but signed with the Houston Texans in free agency.

While Buffalo added veterans Latavius Murray and Damien Harris this offseason, Cook should be a focal point in the running game, and Dorsey has seen signs that he's ready to handle the workload.

"When you see the preseason games, going back to those when things are live, and everything, the ability to finish runs was really encouraging to see," Dorsey said. "Those hidden yards of getting an extra one or two years to keep us out of second and one or third and one. Those things he's really grown and improved on [and] the physicality aspect of it."

Buffalo will get its first glimpse with Cook as the lead back on Monday Night Football when they face the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium at 8:15 p.m. ET.
