Broncos GM Breaks Silence on Courtland Sutton's Absence

Sutton opted to skip the start of voluntary workouts.

Noting that such activities are "100% voluntary," Denver Broncos general manager George Paton expressed little worry over the absence of wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who's chosen to skip this week's start of the offseason training program.

"Sean's talked to Courtland. I've talked to Courtland. He's in a good place," Paton said Thursday in his pre-NFL draft press conference alongside head coach Sean Payton.

There's been conflicting information regarding the impetus for Sutton's decision to stay away from team headquarters. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero first reported the former Pro Bowler is seeking a new contract, as he has two years and $27.6 million — roughly $25 million of which is non-guaranteed — left on the extension he inked in 2021.

However, 9NEWS insider Mike Klis followed Pelissero's report by revealing that Sutton's no-show is related to an offseason ankle surgery and it "doesn't seem like team or Courtland is concerned."

"Team picked up his $2M guarantee option in March. He has been working out daily in Florida," Klis added.

Sutton should have concrete clarity on his future at the conclusion of next week's draft, during which the Broncos could trade the 28-year-old to an interested suitor.

If retained, Sutton will continue to operate as Denver's WR1, catching passes from his 10th starting quarterback in seven NFL seasons.
