Josh Dobbs to Start in Week One for Arizona

Former Browns backup Josh Dobbs has gone from backup in Cleveland to starter in Arizona in less than two weeks.

According to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals will start former Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Josh Dobbs in the season opener against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Dobbs was acquired from the Browns just thirteen days ago after the Cardinals exchanged a fifth-round pick in exchange for the quarterback and a seventh-round pick. The Browns were content carrying three quarterbacks on the roster until the Cardinals came calling. The performance of rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson in the preseason made the decision easier for the front office.

Dobbs will now be the chosen starter for the first time of his entire career. He started a late-season game a year ago for the Titans due to injuries and performed above expectations. He will certainly have his work cut out for him as the Cardinals our widely considered the worst team in the NFL.

Dobbs is a player that the Browns really respected during his two partial seasons with the team and did not want to hold him back from a starting opportunity. While the NFL is considered a very cut-throat business by many, this is yet another example of the Browns doing right by its players and they should continue to be recognized around the league by players and their agents.

For the Cardinals, Dobbs was a player that they had shown interest in during the free agency but their original plan was to roll with Colt McCoy to begin the season. McCoy was not impressive during training camp and that ultimately facilitated the trade for Dobbs. McCoy would announce his retirement from football just days after the trade was made.
