Browns Agree to Deal with TE Jordan Akins

A free agent visit concluded with a signing as Jordan Akins opts to reunite with his former quarterback Deshaun Watson and join the Cleveland Browns per his agency.

The Cleveland Browns have come to terms on a deal with tight end Jordan Akins according to his agent, David Canter of GSE Worldwide. The contract is for two years, $5.2 million if he can reach some incentives. The 30-year old tight end reunites with quarterback Deshaun Watson, both former members of the Houston Texans.

The Browns are only the second team Akins has played for as all five of his previous seasons were in Houston. This past season, Akins posted posted career highs in receiving yardage (497) and touchdowns (5) while tying his career mark for receptions (37).

Akins had posted two 400+ yard receiving seasons in 2019 and 2020 when Watson was the quarterback. The 6'4" 243lb Akins joins a tight end room with David Njoku and Harrison Bryant.

Last season, the Browns brought in Pharaoh Brown when he was let go by the Texans, another tight end with familiarity with Watson.

The Browns were also in contact with Donald Parham, a free agent tight end who had recently played with the Los Angeles Chargers before he ultimately decided to re-sign.

Akins solidifies the tight end room with added depth, but doesn't necessarily preclude the Browns from drafting a tight end next month in what is widely regarded as an extremely talented group.

Akins is the first Browns signing on offense that has come from outside the organization this free agency period. The team re-signed center Ethan Pocic, but the focus to this point has been on the defensive side of the ball.
