Buccaneers Quarterback Battle Between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask 'Drab' Says NFL.com

Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans may have a real interest in the position battle between quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask, but one NFL.com writer thinks the storyline is rather boring.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent the last three years at or near the top of show planning thanks to quarterback Tom Brady.

With Brady retired, the Buccaneers have once again been relegated as an afterthought to many news outlets, and because of it when they do talk about the team it's not usually because of anything good.

Take, for example, the latest on NFL.com from Eric Edholm who doesn't find the upcoming training camp battle to be the new starting quarterback for Tampa Bay all that exciting.

"Soon we'll set some plotlines regarding quarterbacks and the open jobs at that position, but it appears to me that they're mostly either settled already, for all intents and purposes, or not that buzzworthy to begin with," writes Edholm. "Is Baker Mayfield versus Kyle Trask a gladiator showdown in Tampa? Perhaps Mayfield is due for a Geno Smith-like revival...or Trask can revive (his) college glory, but those feel like stretches."

To be fair, Edholm isn't just dubbing the battle for the Buccaneers as less-than-exciting, he's tabbing all NFL quarterback competitions this year in that category.

He says he doesn't expect Carolina Panthers rookie Bryce Young to wait too long before taking over - if at all - and the same goes for C.J. Stroud with the Houston Texans while Edholm says that whether Anthony Richardson beats Gardner Minshew in Week 1 or Week 5 to lead the Indianapolis Colts is, "ultimately not that consequential."

But it's the battles between non-rookie quarterbacks, like the Bucs' that he calls, "even more drab."

And continues by writing, "Sorry folks. I suspect this just isn't the year for sizzling QB competitions to burn up your screens."

It may be boring to Edholm, but if you ask us, it's plenty interesting.

If not for what it means this season for Tampa Bay, what it will eventually mean for the future of this franchise.
