Tyree Wilson Says He Idolizes J.J. Watt

INDIANAPOLIS -- Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson is a man of few words.

Through roughly ten minutes at the podium here at the NFL Combine, the Red Raiders' top defensive prospect didn't elaborate much on the microphone.

No extensive answers. No crowd-pleasing comments. Just straight business, something he likes to adapt on the football field as well.

Wilson didn't begin the draft process at the No. 1 spot of many draft boards despite his 6-foot-6 build, falling behind names such as Jalen Carter or Will Anderson Jr., though he recognized before the start of the season that there was some serious hype around his name.

"I would say early August before training camp you start seeing the first-round projections. But at the end of the day, you still gotta put in the work and live up to the expectations," Wilson told reporters.

"I feel like I'm a different pass rusher than most. I'm not just committed to power, I feel like I can do power and speed and be effective inside and outside."

Still, Wilson could potentially be a top-five pick come April. The Arizona Cardinals - picking at No. 3 - could certainly be in play at some point.

Wilson says wouldn't mind that.

"Arizona has a new head coach, new GM and I'd be excited to play for that and start the rebuild of Arizona," he said.

With the departure of J.J. Watt, the need for another pass rusher in Arizona is only amplified. Watt's absence would leave any shoes too large to fill, yet Wilson could potentially help replace somebody he idolizes.

"I idolize a lot of pass rushers because every pass rusher is different. I'll look at J.J. Watt - he can play inside/outside. Myles Garrett's disruptive and Von Miller just because his hands were so great. He's a great pass rusher on the edge," Wilson said.

Not a shabby group of players to look up to.
