In this story:

There is a ton to build off from last season for the Los Angeles Chargers. They reached the postseason for the first time with head coach Brandon Staley and quarterback Justin Herbert leading the way, but the team collapsed when it mattered most.

Blowing a 27-point lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars was the culmination of a weird year for the Chargers, and now they head into 2023 with questions.

Many wanted Staley fired after the playoff loss, but the organization decided to give him another chance. They brought in a new offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore, to ensure the offense never gets stagnant again, so they are banking on him to help get things going.

But that doesn't mean that Staley's job is safe. One more year without a playoff run, and he could be fired. Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports listed Staley as the second-highest coach on the hot seat entering the 2023 season.

"Staley made the playoffs for the first time as a head coach last season, but that does not mean his job is completely safe or that the Chargers are on the right track."

Per CBS Sports

This is a results-driven world, and this is especially true within the NFL. We see coaches fired all the time for less than what Staley has accomplished, so the pressure is certainly on for him this year.

Not only does the offense need to be more consistent, but the defense as well. His skillset at calling defense was a big reason why Staley was hired in the first place, but so far, the Chargers have been average on that side of the ball.

"The defense was supposed to be L.A.'s calling card under Staley, but that just hasn't happened yet."

Per CBS Sports

You do have to wonder whether or not Moore was brought in as a potential replacement for Staley in case he gets fired at some point. It could be in-season, or after the year's end, but in all aspects of the team, the expectations are sky-high for the Chargers. They must all be better and go on a playoff run; otherwise, changes will likely be made.
