Chargers News: Tom Telesco has Historically Struggled Drafting Star-Level Talent

In this story:

It is never easy to consistently make the correct decision when it comes to the draft in any professional sport. When you take a look at all the different positions and needs within a football team, one can get lost when trying to pinpoint the priorities especially in the early rounds.

The Los Angeles Chargers have been reported to have met with top prospects at every single position. Even though certain spots like running back and wide receiver are being pleaded by fans for the front office to target first, there's not a firm way of knowing until the actual process begins.

Tom Telesco has been LA's GM for 10 years now. They have made the playoffs just three times in that span and haven't been the best when it comes to developing young talent either. Even though it is not on his shoulders only, the Chargers have not been very successful at drafting top-tier talent under Telesco's management.

"Chargers GM Tom Telesco has drafted just 2 pro bowlers outside of round 1 since becoming GM in 2013."

"For reference, all other teams have drafted 127 pro bowlers outside of round 1 since 2013."

Why is this a bad look on Tom Telesco?

Pro-Bowl appearances do not define what makes a player a solid piece on an NFL squad but when you haven't made the playoffs in as many years as the Chargers have, one would expect some more home-grown talent in that time.

Since 2013, Telesco and the Bolts have been able to pick in the top-15 in the first round six different times. The opportunities have consistently been there

What does this mean for the 2023 draft?

Even though LA is picking at number 21 for the first time in their franchise's history, there are still plenty of talented options that could fall to them. They have to be smart and pick up someone that will make an immediate impact. It's good to know that they already could have a plan B of trading down if nobody they desire is still on the board.
