Chargers Rumors: The One Factor Sustaining Brandon Staley's LA Tenure

It feels like the end for Staley in LA is coming soon.

Heading into the new NFL season, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was already on the hot seat. After two seasons of underwhelming performances, Staley was given another chance to redeem himself in 2023.

But there has been more of the same this year, and the Bolts now sit with a record of 2-3. They lost another tough game to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and the talk of Staley being fired has started to reoccur.

One writer believes that the only reason Staley hasn't been fired yet is due to Herbert's skill set. Liam McKeone of The Big Lead explains why.

“Herbert's Monstars-esque arm is the only reason Staley hasn't gotten canned yet. We're now at the point where the Chargers need to at least consider that as a course of action. Sure, whatever Staley has in place now is enough to win some games and remain respectable. But this team has the rarest thing in all of sports-- a quarterback who is on the precipice of becoming elite. Just being good enough is not, in fact, good enough. Or it shouldn't be, anyway.”

Herbert has helped the Chargers win plenty of games that they probably should have lost. He alone has kept Staley afloat in Los Angeles, but even now, Herbert may not be able to save his head coach.

The lack of consistency for the Chargers is the most alarming, and they should be much better than they are.

“When Staley was hired he was supposed to be a smart, young, defense-first coach who would complement the rocket arm of Justin Herbert by ensuring the team excelled in the other stages of the game. None of that has happened, and the most concerning aspect is the defense.”

The Chargers defense under the leadership of Staley has struggled each season. While they have good performances here and there, they have entirely underperformed from where they were supposed to be.

It has hurt this team and put more pressure on the offense to save the day each week. But the offense has its own set of issues, which could explain why Staley takes unnecessary risks almost every week.

Staley has proven that his role may be too much for him to handle. He knows the game of football, but his time as the coach of the Chargers may be coming to an end sooner than he likely expected.
