Chargers Leadership Reflects On Team's .500 Record So Far

LA could be in a much worse position right now..

The new NFL season hasn’t quite gone the way that the Los Angeles Chargers thought it might, but the team is happy where they are. After starting the year at 0-2, the Bolts battled back and narrowly escaped two straight weeks with wins, to even the record.

Now, the Chargers head into the bye week feeling decent about themselves. But it seems that the overall thought about this team is that they are worse than the record suggests. Two weeks in a row, the defense has saved the Bolts from blowing leads and saved head coach Brandon Staley from himself.

Staley doesn’t see it that way, however, and is looking at the positives of the first few weeks of the season.

"We could be 4-0. We lost the first one in a thriller to a really good team, and then we lost, in overtime, to another good team — you guys saw today what they did," Staley said of the Titans, who earned a 27-3 win over the Bengals.

The Bolts head coach made yet another boneheaded decision late in the game against the Las Vegas Raiders this past weekend, and it almost cost the win. But he was bailed out by another game-winning interception, and the Chargers lived to fight another day.

"We could easily be 4-0. Some people could say that we could be 1-3. Right now, we're 2-2," Staley added. "That's what we are, we are a 2-2 football team and we're a team that is improving. We've improved in every game this season, from Game 1 to Game 2, from Game 2 to Game 3, from Game 3 to Game 4. We've gotten better. That's where my focus is, as the head coach."

While Staley wants to talk about the team possibly being 4-0, they also could easily be 0-4. They could have easily dropped the games the last few weeks but hung on at the last second for wins. Quarterback Justin Herbert knows that they need to be better moving forward, and he gave his thoughts on the season.

Herbert added: "It is what it is. We have to take it for what it is and continue to build and develop and go forward from here. We have a bye week heading up, so a lot of us will get our bodies back and get ready to go. A really good opponent coming here in two weeks."

Los Angeles gets two tough tests after the bye this week, in the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. We will really learn just what type of team they are after those games, and the hope is that the Bolts learn from the mistakes that they have made to open the year.
