Writer Predicts Chargers Choose All-American TE In Latest Mock Draft

In this story:
For anybody that was hoping to find out soon what would happen with the whole Austin Ekeler contract extension saga, the man himself came out and confirmed to not expect a change anytime soon. It is feeling like majority of fans want to see him still rocking powder blue after all he's done for us but just want a set answer on his future so the team knows what do moving forward.
Without a doubt, one of the biggest things Ekeler's contract setback is impacting is the 2023 NFL draft. LA's front office has ton of options to choose from and will look to bring in a new franchise player with their 21st pick in the first round. Bijan Robinson is looking like a solid RB prospect, Jordan Addison would love to be their receiver of the future, but it would only make sense to target a new TE if Ekeler does end up being dealed.
Daniel Popper of The Athletic certainly seems to agree (turn on his Twitter notifications if you haven't already Bolts fans) and in his latest mock draft, he poises the Chargers to select Notre Dame's Michael Mayers.

"If the board falls this way, the Chargers could be tempted to take Texas RB Bijan Robinson as a potential replacement for Austin Ekeler, who has been granted permission to seek a trade," said Popper. "The Chargers also need some edge rushing depth, and Nolan Smith and Lukas Van Ness were available. But in Kellen Moore’s new offense, the Chargers will be using more 12 personnel, and they need an all-around tight end who can take over a Dalton Schultz-type role. Mayer is too good of a fit to pass up. "
This is not the first we've heard of Mayer being heavily linked to the Chargers' organization and many insiders believe it would be a great match. Mayer already poises a lot of NFL qualities and built up a strong reputation in college.
In his final season with Notre Dame, the 21-year-old put defenders on blast as he logged over 800 yards and 60 receptions in the 12 games he hit the field. he would make an immediate impact for the organization if drafted.
