1 Bold Comment by Chargers’ Mike McDaniel Creates More Questions Than Answers

The Los Angeles Chargers appear to have a serious breakout on their hands with Jacob Spomer. For an offensive line littered with problems, it’s the same story with the quick rise of Branson Taylor.

Which…makes recent comments by Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel all the more confusing.

Speaking with reporters on Monday, McDaniel suggested that the starting left guard job is Kayode Awosika’s to lose.

"I think the No. 74 [Awosika] might stick, he's been fortunately been coming along, but realistically the battle wasn't complete and guys have to solidify their spots," McDaniel said. “…I would just say Kayode has kind of taken the lead in terms of it's almost his job to lose because of his growth in the last two weeks.”

That’s a bit of an odd turn of events as the Chargers still sort out a starting spot this close to the regular season.

Chargers’ starting job comment fallout

The Chargers offensive line situation was a mess before the devastating Tyler Biadasz injury.

Jake Slaughter, previously in the lead for that left guard spot, or so it seemed, will now start at center. Awosika, Taylor, Trey Pipkins and a few others were in the fight at the left guard spot.

Monday, at the same time McDaniel was talking up Awosika, it was Pipkins getting first-team reps during a training camp practice.

One has to wonder, then, if things are really as cut and dry as McDaniel says.

There are more questions, too:

Have they given serious thought to riding a youth movement with Branson Taylor at left guard?
Speaking of youth movements, is there any thought to keeping Slaughter at guard and letting the Spomer breakout give him the lead role at center?

Either way, the fact the Chargers are still trying to figure out this job and making these sorts of comments isn’t a good sign this close to the regular season.

All of this happened on the same day unquestioned and unchallenged starting right guard Cole Strange was beating himself up publicly for his recent preseason performance:

So…not a great look for the Chargers as a whole.

As we’ve said a few times now, no matter what the Week 1 lineup ends up being, the discussion around the Chargers might just be whether or not this current group can field a better line than what was out there last year.
