Chargers Offense Misfiring, Injury Updates, Tyler Biadasz Move, Sunday Practice News

The Los Angeles Chargers took the field for another practice on Sunday morning, their second since their preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The Chargers were hoping to bounce back from their poor showing on Thursday and get back work at practice, Saturday did not go very well, at least for the offense and unfortunately, Sunday was not much better.

The good news is that the Chargers defense seems to be stringing together positive practice days and the starting unit that took the field against the 49ers was missing several key players and still held San Francisco's offense in check. Based on the unsettled offensive line and the need to establish continuity following the loss of Tyler Biadasz, the defense may have to carry the Chargers offense in the early parts of the season.

Let's dive into the news of the day and important notes from practice. The Chargers are gearing up to take on the Rams in their final preseason matchup on Thursday night with roster cutdown day Sunday August 30th.

Tyler Biadasz official roster move

The Chargers officially placed Tyler Biadasz on injured reserve today all but ending any speculation that he will have any chance at returning this year. There is a minor procedural move that the Chargers could make by designating him for return during roster cutdowns, otherwise and the most likely scenario is that he will miss the entire 2026 season.

Biadasz' injury has been an odd mystery. There has been no public release of what he is actually dealing with, if and when he will have surgery

Injury updates

Rashawn Slater maintained his ramp up protocol for the second straight day of practice and is essentially on a pitch count from the team and medical staff as he works his way back into the fold. While Slater has exited practice, for the second straight day Trey Pipkins and rookie Travis Burke have been taking his place on the offensive line.

Defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell, despite leaving practice on Saturday early with trainers, was back in the action on Sunday.

Wide receiver Brenen Thompson was also back on the field wearing a gold jersey.

Offense stumbles again

For the second day in a row, the Chargers offense had a rough go against the defense. There were some glimmers of hope and energy provided throughout but for the most part, the defense won the day handily.

Is the hangover from losing of Tyler Biadasz haunting their performance? There is reason to still hold out hope after watching the 49ers game. It appears Mike McDaniel put forth a very vanilla version of the offense but the concerning aspect of that thought is that there were still multiple pre-snap penalties.

Heading into the season the line and quarterback Justin Hebert have a few weeks to gain continuity, depending on how long it takes to name a starting left guard. McDaniel and the offensive staff will be able to scheme much more opponent specific gameplans to hopefully give the group stronger footing to stand on.

Roster battles in the final stretch

The starting left guard is still not settled with Trey Pipkins getting the first run with the first team two days in a row. This may simply be giving Pipkins a chance to prove himself after spending the past few weeks at left tackler with Slater sidelined. Head coach Jim Harbaugh did say before Saturday's practice that Kayode Awosika was in the lead for the job but they were not ready to declare as starter.

On the back end of the roster, current injuries may have an outsized impact on those tough battles and narrow decisions. Kyle Kennard, Branson Taylor and Eric Rogers were all battling for roles and even roster spots. With them being on the sidelines, it may make some roster decisions tougher than others. The next few days will be worth keeping an eye to see which of them gets back into practice and prepares for the Rams on Thursday night.
