The NFL preseason is full of players trying to turn a few weeks of football into an opportunity that can change their careers instantly. Many players come and go during training camp. However for a undrafted rookie in Los Angeles, an opportunity on the 53-man roster has started to look very real.

Jacob Spomer entered Los Angeles Chargers training camp without the same spotlight that followed some of the team’s draft picks. He wasn’t selected during the 2026 NFL draft, and there was no guarantee he would make enough of an impression to stick around.

But so far, he’s giving the Chargers plenty to think about. With the offensive line dealing with multiple injuries, Spomer could be a legit depth piece for the Bolts. Based off recent seasons and the offensive line woes, this addition is more important than ever.

A chance that keeps getting bigger

Throughout training camp, Jacob Spomer has continued to receive opportunities at center and has looked comfortable handling the responsibility. He has been able to work with different combinations along the offensive line, giving the coaching staff a closer look at what he can provide. As of right now, he looks to be a very promising player. For an undrafted player, those reps are important. Every practice gives him another chance to show that he belongs.

Spomer's training camp has been solid, being reliable and improving every day. He seems to be beating expectations at a rapid speed. The biggest positive came from last Thursday's game, where he performed very well.

The center posted a 82.6 percent pass blocking rate, with zero sacks or pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. That statistic shows how steady he is in pass protection. We all know what happened last year when Herbert thew the ball. Spomer could be a perfect piece for the line in the future.

The Tyler Biadasz injury was heartbreaking to hear, and was a punch in the gut for the Chargers. This makes the timing of Spomer's recent breakout especially important. The need for a serviceable center depth-wise, has become a sudden topic of discussion. Spomer's ability to step in when needed, protect the quarterback, and handle pressure can give Los Angeles another option. His recent success does not mean much, as many things are up in the air. However, it should make you feel better about the future of the offense.
