In this story:

Your Los Angeles Chargers are heading into their Week Seven matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs desperate to get a win. After a tough 20-17 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this week, the team now sits with a record of 2-3, and they can’t afford any more bad losses.

There are plenty of reasons why the Bolts are in this situation. They haven’t been able to find any sort of consistent play from their offense, and their defense had some early-season issues. Plus, their head coach tends to take unnecessary risks.

But Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times doesn’t see it that way. They see the problem lying in the guy that the team gave $262.5 million to over the offseason.

“The Chargers have an offensive-ground-game problem. They have a defensive-third-down problem. Now, they also have a Justin Herbert problem. Herbert might not be the reason why the Chargers were defeated on Monday night, but he couldn’t make himself the reason they won either. And that’s a problem.”

Per Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times

Quarterback Justin Herbert has turned himself into one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL since he was drafted by LA in 2020. But at the same time, he has underperformed to the standard that he has set for himself with his play.

He wasn't the reason for the loss to Dallas, but he also didn't take the game over to get his team a needed win. He did own up to needing to play better, but how many times can the same things be said.

“I gotta make more plays at quarterback,” said Herbert, who played with a fractured middle finger on his non-throwing left hand.

Per Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times

This seems to be a common occurrence for Herbert, and I think it's time to start a narrative about him. Herbert is great, but does he elevate his team? I think the answer may be a difficult no.

The Chargers should be much better than they have been with him under center, and while not everything is his fault, he is the quarterback and they get all the blame. They also get all the praise when the team wins.

When he was at Oregon, a similar feeling occurred. The Ducks could have been much better, but Herbert failed to elevate the team to new heights. And it seems that the same may be happening with the Chargers.

I hope Herbert proves me wrong going forward, but until I see otherwise, it may be time to look at him in a different light than we have been.
