Andy Reid Comments on Kadarius Toney’s Injury Progress

In this story:
The Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl LVII week experience has gone by in a flash and before they know it, they'll be taking the field on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles in a matchup of the NFL's two best clubs from this season.
On Opening Night of Super Bowl festivities, both organizations took the stage to comment on the week ahead, their seasons thus far, Sunday's game and much more. Tuesday and Wednesday featured more of the same in individual team availability, and Thursday was the final time that the Chiefs would hold a formal media session before the game is played. One major storyline that's been monitored for Kansas City throughout the week and will continue being watched as the week unfolds is injuries.
With a few days of observations and knowledge from practice at his disposal, Chiefs head coach Andy spoke on Thursday morning and provided his last updates of the week. When asked about wide receiver Kadarius Toney specifically, Reid didn't commit to him playing just yet but said that Toney did everything the team had in store for him on Wednesday. Toney will partake in the Chiefs' ramped-up practice later on Thursday, then the team will evaluate where he's at. Here's the full quote from Reid:
"He did everything yesterday that was planned for him to do, but he's got more today and we'll see how he does. He was spirited yesterday and running around like crazy, so we'll see how it works out today."
Toney, whom the Chiefs traded for during the season, has battled hamstring and ankle injuries since coming over from the New York Giants. Listed on the team's official injury report as limited in Wednesday's practice with both of those ailments on his injury designation, Toney was the only player on the report who wasn't a full participant. Reid said that Thursday's practice would be the toughest of the week, so Toney's level of participation is worth keeping an eye on.
On Monday night, Toney said that he'd "definitely" be playing in the Super Bowl. Despite that assertion, he has yet to be deemed a full-go by Reid or presumably the Chiefs' athletic training staff. Kansas City has tended to take things slowly with Toney and his injury rehab this year, so this instance could simply be a part of the long-term plan for the week. On Wednesday evening, Joshua Brisco of Arrowhead Report wrote about the Toney situation and when would be an appropriate time to seriously question things:
Don't assume Toney suffered a setback due to his limited participation on Wednesday, as he's likely been limited in the team's practices without official health designations. However, if Toney doesn't reach full participation status by Friday, it leaves room for concern that he may be limited in Super Bowl LVII, with the ever-present potential for the type of early exit that decimated KC's wide receiver group in the AFC Championship Game.
In seven regular-season games with the Chiefs, Toney hauled in 14 passes on 17 targets for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Additionally, he ran the ball five times for 59 yards and another score. The 2021 first-round pick has six receptions for 45 yards in his first two playoff games, although he logged just four offensive snaps against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game before injuring his ankle and not returning. It remains to be seen whether his Monday prediction of being active on Sunday will come true, but Thursday might be a measuring stick for that effort.
