Chiefs Fans Should Also Root for These Teams This Week

Should Kansas City Chiefs win out, they could use help in these specific games on Week 15 docket.

In this story:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Clinched playoff berths have been on milk cartons this season.

It’s only the third time since 2002 realignment that the NFL has entered Week 15 without a team having clinched a postseason spot (it also happened in 2014 and 2021). But that’ll likely change this week.

The Chiefs, very much on the outside looking in, need a lot more than simply a win over the Chargers on Sunday (12 p.m. CT, CBS/KCTV, Channel 5, 96.5 The Fan). They can get much-needed help if the chips fall their way in the following games.

Root for Cincinnati to beat Baltimore

The Chiefs would own big advantage on the Ravens in the race for the final AFC wild-card berth. Kansas City would move to 7-7 and Baltimore, which lost in the head-to-head meeting at Arrowhead Stadium Sept. 28, would fall to 6-8.

Root for Jacksonville to beat the Jets

The Jaguars (9-4) can help the Chiefs by winning the AFC South, where they own a one-game lead on Houston (8-5). The Chiefs don’t want to end the season in a tie with the Jaguars due to Kansas City’s 31-28 loss at Jacksonville in Week 5. Jacksonville would take a big step toward that a division crown with a victory over the lowly Jets (3-10).

Root for Buffalo to beat New England

Similar to Jacksonville, the Chiefs don’t want to end the year in a tie with Buffalo (9-4). Since Kansas City lost the head-to-head meeting at Buffalo in Week 9. The Chiefs would be in better shape if the Bills can rally to win the AFC East, leaving New England as a higher-seeded wild card.

Root for Denver to beat Green Bay

Denver clinches a playoff berth with a win but, at this point, the Chiefs want Denver (11-2) to also capture the AFC West. That’s because the Chiefs want to get into a tiebreaker fight with the Chargers, not the Broncos.

If the Chiefs win Sunday, they’ll split the season series with Los Angeles. And if Denver goes on to win the division, the next tiebreaker between the Chiefs and Chargers would be division record (Kansas City is currently 1-2 in the division with three games left; Los Angeles is 4-0 with two games left).

Should Kansas City somehow tie the Chargers in division record, the subsequent tiebreaker best record against common opponents. That’s where the Chiefs would have an advantage. Kansas City has wins over Washington, Indianapolis and the New York Giants, three teams that have beaten the Chargers.

Root for Seahawks to beat Colts

Fresh out of retirement, Philip Rivers could be in action for Indianapolis. The Chiefs want him to lose – a lot – beginning with Sunday’s long trip to the Pacific Northwest. Despite Kansas City’s big win over the Colts in Week 12, Indianapolis (8-5) still has a two-game lead on the Chiefs (6-7). In order to make that head-to-head win count, the Chiefs need to gain ground on the Colts and at least finish with a tied record.
