The Indianapolis Colts have learned the past few seasons that an NFL roster can't have too much running back depth. With that in mind, the Colts could be a landing spot for one of the best running backs remaining in the free agent market.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that Indianapolis is one of three teams that former Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon is "looking at" early in free agency.

"As the Packers have rebuilt their RB room, free agent RB AJ Dillon has several options outside GB, with sources saying he's looking at the Giants, Colts and Cowboys."

Dillon mostly served as a secondary backfield option to Aaron Jones in Green Bay. Even as the team's No. 2 back, though, Dillon received at least 200 touches and rushed for more than 600 yards in each of the last three seasons.

During 2023, Dillon ran for 613 yards and 2 touchdowns while averaging 3.4 yards per carry.

The Packers drafted Dillon in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. He rushed for 2,428 yards while averaging 4.1 yards per carry in 60 games with Green Bay.

Prior to the legal tampering period beginning, Pro Football Focus ranked Dillon 10th among free agent running backs. He was also the 135th overall free agent according to PFF.

Interestingly, former Colts running back Zack Moss, who experienced great success with Jonathan Taylor missing the beginning of last season, was the No. 136 overall free agent on the PFF list.

Most of the top free agent running backs agreed to new contracts during the two-day legal tampering period. So, according to the PFF list, Dillon is one of the best two running backs still available in free agency.

In Indianapolis, Dillon would replace Moss, who agreed to a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday. Other than Taylor, the Colts have running backs Evan Hull, Tyler Goodson and Zavier Scott under contract for 2024.

NFL free agency officially begins at 4 pm on Wednesday. At that point, free agents who have agreed to contracts the past couple days can begin signing their new deals.
