RGIII Reacts to Commanders Move: 'Slingin' Sammy Howell!'

Former Washington Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III is a fan of the Sam Howell decision ... and apparently a curator of Washington's great memories, too.

After the Commanders announced Friday that Howell will be their Week 1 starter, Griffin posted a message on social media that the "kids nowadays" might not get.

"Slinging Sam Howell," RGIII writes ... and yes, we are going to work on the assumption that Griffin is aware of the greatness of "Slingin' Sammy Baugh,"" arguably the greatest player in Washington franchise history.

Baugh was Washington's first-round draft pick in 1937, and he played 15 years with the team, leading the franchise to two NFL titles and becoming part of the very first class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Is that Howell's destiny? We will tap the breaks there, as Howell's only NFL start came in the Commanders' regular-season finale of 2022, when the then-rookie Howell completed 11-of-19 pass attempts for 169 yards with one touchdown and an interception. He also had five carries for 35 yards and a touchdown.

But for the 2023 season? And hopes of being a playoff team? Maybe this Sammy will indeed be "slingin," as Commanders head coach Ron Rivera surely hopes.

"Watching the tape, I kept thinking to myself, 'That's what I wanted to see.' So I feel confident and comfortable enough to say Sam's our guy," Rivera said of his decision to make Howell the starter over Jacoby Brissett. "There's still more growth to go. He'll continue to get better. We believe that."

And apparently, RGIII believes as well.
