NFL Draft: QB 'Has to be The Pick' For Commanders

The Washington Commanders hold the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and the franchise has a chance to potentially alter the organization's trajectory with the right pick.

What will the Washington Commanders do with the No. 2 overall pick when draft day comes around? That is the franchise-altering question.

The consensus is that the Commanders will take a quarterback given the talent available to them with such a high pick. Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye are all potential targets for new general manager Adam Peters and new head coach Dan Quinn.

Washington won't waste this opportunity to take a player who could be the face of the franchise for the next decade or so could they?

CBS Sports writes that quarterback HAS to be the pick for the Commanders at No. 2.

"Sam Howell was arguably the worst quarterback in the league in the second half of last season, and clearly not the franchise quarterback Washington envision," CBS Sports writes. "New offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury likely wants his own guy and the Commanders could potentially get Caleb Williams pending on what the Bears do with the top pick. Either way, the Texans proved you can get the better quarterback at No. 2 if the franchise has the right coaching and offensive system in place. The Commanders can't win without a franchise quarterback, which has to be the pick at No. 2."

One could only imagine the uproar from Washington fans if the team decides against selecting a quarterback (we are fairly certain they won't).

Given the talent available and the fact that with new ownership along with a host of new faces in the organization, having a young quarterback to be the face of the new era in Washington seems like a slam dunk.

Add to that, Kliff Kingsbury is the new offensive coordinator and if the Commanders can get USC's Williams or any of the "top" quarterbacks in the draft, then the positivity surrounding the organization will be unlike anything it has seen for decades.

It will be an interesting watch for fans over the next few months to see how the organization goes about its business ushering in this new era.

But for most, to properly signal the beginning of this new chapter, a new franchise quarterback has to spearhead the transformation.
