It’s the most natural thing: Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell is coming off his rookie season and is projected to be the starter in 2023. He needs work and he needs to throw.

So he needs somebody to catch ... enter wide receiver Dyami Brown, who has been joining Howell in this exercise for years.

Howell and Brown are friends from their days together as college teammates at North Carolina for two seasons. Then Brown came to Washington in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. ... and Howell followed one year later, coming to Washington in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Brown has yet to elevate on the Commanders depth chart, though that is in part due to the reputations or qualities of others - Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson and Curtis Samuel - higher than him on the depth chart.

But to Howell? The notion is that surely Brown can play, as he exceeded 1,000 yards receiving per year in college while he also averaged over 20 yards per reception.

So ... off to work they go, as we see in a video via Jack Gillen’s Instagram and circulated by Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

Will Sam need a security blanket once the real games begin, and will new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy see fit to facilitate that? Maybe so, and the development of Brown would surely help in that area, as he did show flashes in one outing in 2022, in a Week 5 loss at Tennessee in which he caught two deep-ball touchdowns and offered up his first 100-yard receiving game.

But for now? Sam Howell is a thrower and he needs a catcher. And Dyami Brown is his guy.
