Commanders Have 'Tremendous' QB Game Plan After Signing Jacoby Brissett

The Washington Commanders are making a small, but firm decision at quarterback by signing Jacoby Brissett to a one-year deal.

The move isn't the biggest headline grabber, but it solidifies that the team is going to give Sam Howell a legitimate chance to be the team's starter by not bringing in a definite franchise guy.

The move was applauded by Bleacher Report, listing it as the fifth-best acquisition of the NFL offseason thus far.

"The Commanders now have a tremendous game plan at the game's most important position, and they didn't overpay to get it," Bleacher Report said. "This acquisition might not make a lot of headlines, but it was undoubtedly one of the savviest moves of the early offseason."

The Commanders could have rolled the dice and tried signing Derek Carr or Jimmy Garoppolo, both of whom will likely start this season instead of younger prospects, but the team is giving Howell, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, a shot to be the guy.

Howell made his NFL debut in the final game of the regular season on Jan. 8, a 26-6 win over the playoff-bound Dallas Cowboys where he threw for 165 yards and a touchdown while also running for 35 yards and a score.

While the sample size is small, there's enough of a spark there to invest in, and bringing Brissett in is a comfortable safety blanket in case things go awry with Howell.
