Are 49ers Still Better Than Cowboys? Power Rankings at 2-0

The Dallas Cowboys have looked dominant in the first two weeks of the season against the New York Giants and New York Jets. But the San Francisco 49ers still have their believers.

The Dallas Cowboys opened their season with a shellacking of the New York Giants, and continued that trend on Sunday with another beatdown of the New York Jets.

In their two first games, the Cowboys outscored the New York teams 70-10 and have solidified themselves as one of the best teams in the league already. ... So much so that in a recent NFL power rankings, Dallas came in as the No. 2 team in the league trailing only the San Francisco 49ers.

Wait a minute ... Just No. 2?!

Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer cited strong showings by the defense, but a need for improvement from Dak Prescott and company in his ratings.

"The Cowboys have outscored the two New York teams 70-10 with some dominant defense and special teams early. The offense is still trying to find its new way under Mike McCarthy, so they will need more from Dak Prescott and Tony Pollard as the matchups get tougher beyond Arizona in Week 3."

Week 3 is a perfect time for the Cowboys to get things on offense clicking even more as the Cardinals rank No. 9 in terms of passing yards per attempt given up with 6.9. They also are tied for the fourth-most rushing touchdowns given up through two games, giving up the same amount of rushing scores that Dallas has as accounted for a team (3).

As for Prescott, it is no secret why he doesn't have astronomical numbers when you consider the conditions of the Week 1 game. He did however throw for 255 yards and two scores against the Jets.

When you are second in the league in scoring as an offense and you are considered the "weak link" of the team, that is a pretty great problem to have. But the 49ers issue is worth mentioning, because while the highly-ranked (and also undefeated) Philadelphia Eagles may be elite, the Cowboys are consistently confident in those NFC East head-to-head duels.

The 49ers, though? They've taken the Cowboys down in back-to-back playoff seasons, and they loom as Dallas' Week 5 foe this year. Who's really No. 1? Sunday night, October 8 in San Jose will tell us a great deal.
