Dallas is 'Gonna Love' Brandin Cooks, Drew Brees Tells Cowboys

For receiver Brandin Cooks, a stamp of approval from one of the best quarterbacks of all time could go a long way in ramping up the excitement for Dallas Cowboys fans ready to watch him don the star on his helmet this upcoming season.

Dallas Cowboys receiver Brandin Cooks has played with Tom Brady, appeared in two Super Bowls and has seemingly exceeded the expectations placed upon him after being a first-round pick by the New Orleans Saints in 2014.

But it's an additional stamp of approval from one of the best quarterbacks of all time that could go a long way in ramping up the excitement for Cowboys fans ahead of their first time watching Cooks don the star on his helmet this upcoming season.

Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer raved about Dallas' new receiver when speaking to the media on Thursday. However, it was an interesting text Schottenheimer received from the one-and-only Drew Brees after Cooks was traded to Dallas that spoke volumes to how the veteran pass-catcher is still perceived in NFL circles, even from players no longer in the league.

"Drew Brees and I are very close," said Schottenheimer, who was Brees' quarterback coach from 2002-2005 when the two were on the then-San Diego Chargers. "When we made the move to get Brandin, the very first text I got was from Drew. He was like, ‘You are gonna love this guy.’ And Drew is a hard guy to give out a lot of positive reinforcement.”

Brees, who played with Cooks in New Orleans for three seasons (2014-16), is second all-time in career passing yards (80,358) and passing touchdowns (571), trailing only Brady. Cooks has played with each quarterback, and, despite some inconsistencies during his time with the New England Patriots, has been praised by both.

"He's just been so much fun to be around," Brady said of Cooks in 2017. "He really adds to a great group of other receivers that I've been fortunate to play with for a long time."

Six years later, Cooks hasn't appeared to have lost his step, and is continuing to impress those around him. This includes his new offensive coordinator, who echoed much of what the two legendary quarterbacks have said.

"What Brandin brings us is way more than just speed," Schottenheimer said. "It’s really fun to watch him run, but what I love is the competitor and the way he’s encouraging that entire room of receivers. It’s been awesome."

Though he's clearly not of the legendary status of Brees or Brady, Dak Prescott will now toss Cooks the rock in hopes of building another elite passing connection for Dallas outside of CeeDee Lamb. Prescott won't be reaching Hall-of-Fame status overnight, but his proven production gives Cooks a strong likelihood of reaching the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the seventh time during what will be his 10th season.

And in the process, Cooks could help Prescott and the Cowboys offense reach new heights on the quest for an NFC East title and a hopeful run in the postseason, a place Cooks hasn't been since losing in Super Bowl LIII in Feb. 2019 when he was with the Los Angeles Rams.
