Super Bowl and the Dolphins: Former Chiefs, 2023 Opener in Play? Early SB LVIII Odds

The Kansas City Chiefs' second Super Bowl title in four years no doubt had to bring some mixed emotions for two current members of the Miami Dolphins, wide receiver Tyreek Hill and cornerbacks coach Sam Madison.

Both of them were with the Chiefs for the 2021 season before heading to Miami last offseason — for different reasons.

Hill was traded to the Dolphins after the Chiefs decided they didn't want to give him the kind of contract he wanted, whereas head coach Andy Reid gave Madison permission to speak with the Dolphins even though he was under contract because he knew it was an opportunity to get back to South Florida that Madison really coveted.

Hill was active on Twitter throughout the game, at one point calling quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce the greatest duo of all time and then later pointing out in the second half after the Chiefs erased their 10-point halftime deficit, "Nobody answering the phone , but all first half they had my number."

Before the game, Hill tweeted he would give "500 yen" if any follower replied with the correct predicted score, with one follower nailing the 38-35 Chiefs victory — along with Harrison Butker winning it with a late field goal.

-- While on the topic of Hill, he tweeted that his podcast "It Needed To Be Said" would resume shortly after being put on hold during the season.

2023 OPENER A POSSIBILITY?

With Kansas City winning the Super Bowl, it means the Chiefs will kick off the 2023 regular season at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night, Sept. 7.

The Dolphins are among the Chiefs' home opponents next season, so there's one-eighth of a chance they'll play in the season opener.

But the other seven teams that will play on the road against Kansas City in 2023 include attractive opponents like the Eagles, Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, along with the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, and the other three AFC West teams (Chargers, Broncos, Raiders).

It also should be noted the Chiefs will be the home team for a game in Germany in 2023, meaning there's now a 1-in-4 chance the Dolphins will play the Chiefs in the kickoff game or in Europe.

The Dolphins would have been a candidate for the 2023 kickoff game regardless of the Super Bowl outcome because they're also scheduled to play at Philadelphia next season.

FORMER DOLPHINS IN SUPER BOWL

The Chiefs and Eagles each featured former Dolphins players on their active roster — Chad Henne for Kansas City, and Ndamukong Suh and Robert Quinn for Philadelphia.

While Henne didn't play in the game before announcing his retirement on Instagram afterward, Suh and Quinn had very limited roles for the Eagles.

Suh played 11 defensive snaps and was credited with one QB hit, though he was flagged for an illegal use of the hands to the face that gave K.C. a first down; Quinn played only two snaps.

The Kansas City practice squad included former Dolphins players Austin Reiter and La'Mical Perine, who was signed after his practice squad contract with the Dolphins expired in late January.

EARLY SUPER BOWL LVIII ODDS

With Super Bowl LVII now over, we've got early odds for SB LVIII, and they don't necessarily paint a great picture for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins stand in the bottom half of the 16 AFC teams, according to the early SB LVIII odds provided by Bet Online (www.betonline.ag).

The Dolphins are listed at 28/1, which ranks 13th in the NFL but 10th in the AFC. The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are listed as the favorites at 5/1, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles at 7/1, and the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers at 8/1.

The longest shot based on the early odds is Houston, listed at 150/1.

For comparison purposes, the Dolphins opened at 40/1 before the 2022 season and that was tied for 18th in the NFL.
