Jason Pierre-Paul Joins OBJ in Pushing for 2026 Return to Giants

Another Giants first-round draft pick who was traded away has voiced his desire to return to Big Blue.

In this story:

It turns out that former New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. isn't the only player taking notice of the changes happening with the arrival of the John Harbaugh era in East Rutherford and wanting a piece of the action.

While the reports of the free agent receiver, who hasn't stepped onto an NFL gridiron since the 2024 season, meeting up with the Giants head coach during the league owners' meetings in Arizona have become a main topic circling the franchise, it appears another fan favorite saw it as an opportunity to put his own name into the conversation.

That is 15-year veteran defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who, like Beckham, has seen his career derailed by injuries yet still believes he can ball and is seeking his own return to a professional roster in 2026.

Pierre-Paul, who has played in 183 career games for five different organizations, including the Giants from 2010-2017, took to social media amid all the gossip about Big Blue's talks with their former star pass catcher to make a playful yet mildly serious offer of his services to their defensive front.

"@nygiants I'm still available and ready to take on some [offensive tackles] and dominate in run-stop football the GIANTS WAY," Pierre-Paul tweeted out from his personal account on Tuesday.

"Let's make it happen, Giants Fans, Giants Nation, Let’s go!! I know, I know, I know."

Pierre-Paul's online shoutout to the franchise certainly caught the attention of many Giants faithful who remembered the utter dominance he brought to their pass rush during his accomplished tenure in New York.

The Giants drafted Pierre-Paul No. 15 overall out of South Florida in the 2010 NFL Draft, where he went on to become one of the formidable faces of their front seven during their glorious postseason run to Super Bowl XLVI in 2011.

That season, he led the team with a career-high 16.5 sacks to go along with 86 tackles, two forced fumbles, and seven pass deflections that helped lift the Giants past multiple high-powered offenses en route to their fourth Lombardi Trophy via their 21-17 win over the New England Patriots.

In six seasons wearing the blue, Pierre-Paul racked up 433 total tackles, 58 sacks (still ranks 10th best in franchise history), 17 forced turnovers (two returned for touchdowns), and 51 pass deflections. His efforts helped the Giants' defense become a nuisance and finish among the top 10 units three times during that span.

New York traded Pierre-Paul to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers right before the 2018 draft in exchange for a third-round pick and a fourth-round pick swap.

His elite production would rebound as he earned at least 8.5 sacks in each of the next three seasons with the Bucs, including the 2020 campaign, when he helped the franchise reach and win his second Super Bowl.

Ever since that run in Tampa, it's been a steady dip for the 37-year-old edge rusher. Pierre-Paul lost most of the 2021 season to a torn rotator cuff injury that forced the Buccaneers to part ways with him after that season ended.

He has had short stints with the Ravens, Saints, and Dolphins over the four years, but none have stuck long enough (13 combined starts in 22 games) to allow him time to prove himself as a capable impact player at his age.

Thus, the idea of a potential reunion with the champion defensive end whose name is forever stamped into Giants lore might be an intriguing one to the fans who feel nostalgia for the good old days, but it can't be viewed as anything more than a toying message to the organization in light of the present moment.

As with Beckham, nothing should be viewed as a serious mutual interest unless the Giants return the message and invite any free-agent player to the facilities for a workout to assess where their health and physical abilities remain strong.

On the other hand, both former greats played their NFL careers at positions of need for the Giants, especially on the defensive line, which needs reinforcements to stop the run more effectively next season.

Pierre-Paul's resume has been modest in that area, but he's only posted a PFF run defense grade above 70.0 once in the past five seasons.

It might be hard-pressed for the aging veteran to truly find a place along the Giants' defensive front and be a true contributor to either phase. The Giants have some young pieces trying to rise through the ranks to become more full-time impact players, as well as a potential draft addition.

We can't blame Pierre-Paul for trying to poke the bear that is the current brass over at 1925 Giants Drive; however, as Harbaugh seems to be seeking out players who exemplify what it means to love the brand of Giants football.

No. 90 certainly showed that pride in the brand during his stint in the Big Apple, but while it's fun to envision the return of prominent players for the franchise, it's more than likely that ship has sailed and the Giants will continue to look elsewhere for their much-needed beef in the trenches.
