NFL’s Highest-Paid Cornerbacks: Full Breakdown Following Christian Gonzalez’s Extension with Patriots

Christian Gonzalez has cashed in before the 2026 season opener.

That’s right, there is once again a new highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, as Gonzalez and the Patriots have agreed to terms on a four-year, $135 million contract extension. The deal includes $102 million in guaranteed money and will pay him an average of $33.75 million per year—the most in league history.

Earlier this offseason, Trent McDuffie took the title of the league’s highest-paid cornerback when he and the Rams agreed to a four-year pact worth $124 million ($31 million APY). He was soon surpassed by Browns defender Denzel Ward, who inked a two-year, $62.2 million extension worth $31.1 million per year. Then came Devon Witherspoon—Gonzalez’s 2023 NFL draftmate—who reset the market again with a four-year, $132 million extension.

Gonzalez, 24, was selected by the Patriots with the No. 17 pick in the 2023 draft and has since become one of the top cornerbacks in football. He earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and a Pro Bowl nod in ’25 while helping New England to an appearance in Super Bowl LX. Over his first three seasons, Gonzalez has tallied 145 total tackles, 24 passes defensed and three interceptions.

Prior to McDuffie, Witherspoon and Ward’s new deals this offseason, Sauce Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr. were the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league. Stingley reset the market last March when he signed a three-year, $90 million extension with the Texans. Gardner signed a four-year, $120.4 million contract extension with the Jets a few months later, but was traded to the Colts less than a full season into the deal. Gonzalez has now overtaken all of them, and also owns the largest total contract value of any cornerback in league history at $135 million.
