2023 NFL Draft: Where Does Sports Illustrated Rank the Jaguars' Class?

The Jaguars had a franchise-record 13 draft picks last weekend, but what does that mean for their standing in SI's rankings of AFC draft classes?

Three AFC South teams finished with top-five draft grades in Sports Illustrated's rankings of the AFC's 2023 draft classes, but the Jaguars weren't quite held in the same regard as their rivals.

While the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans ranked No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 in the conference for their draft hauls, Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame ranked the Jaguars' 13-player class as the No. 14 class in the AFC.

"The Jaguars could have made a nice move in the loaded AFC with a strong draft class, but this year’s draft feels like a lost opportunity. Offensive tackle Anton Harrison should start right away after Jacksonville lost Jawaan Taylor in free agency, but the rest of this group is underwhelming," Verderame wrote.

"Tight end Brenton Strange had only 755 receiving yards across four years at Penn State, and, while third-round running back Tank Bigsby was productive at Auburn, he will only be a complement to star back Travis Etienne. However, the Jaguars got good value on Day 3 with receiver Parker Washington and safety Antonio Hamilton."

The Jaguars 2023 draft class is as follows.

  • 1st, No. 27: OT Anton Harrison, Oklahoma
  • 2nd, No. 61: TE Brenton Strange, Penn State
  • 3rd, No. 88: RB Tank Bigsby, Auburn
  • 4th, No. 121: LB Ventrell Miller, Florida
  • 4th, No. 130: DL Tyler Lacy, Oklahoma State
  • 5th, No. 136: EDGE/LB Yasir Abdullah, Louisville
  • 5th, No. 160: DB Antonio Johnson, Texas A&M
  • 6th, No. 185: WR Parker Washington, Penn State
  • 6th, No. 202: CB Christian Braswell, Rutgers
  • 6th, No. 208: S Erick Hallett II, Pittsburgh
  • 7th, No. 226: OL Cooper Hodges, App. State
  • 7th, No. 227: DL Raymond Vohasek, UNC
  • 7th, No. 240: FB Derek Parish, Houston

"Well, what we tried to do is, Coach and I, throughout the process, once the day started was look at ways we could improve the roster, especially on the special teams side," Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said after the draft. "And just selecting guys that had a chance to compete for the 53 and as well as special teams. Bring some added value there. And felt good about the group we got."

"We're going to find out over the next couple of months and, really, years. We feel really good today about the group that we've been able to assemble over the last three days, but now it's up to them. They've got a seat, a chair in the locker room and that's all they have at this point. Where they fit on the roster, that's up to them to show us exactly where that lies."
