Unlucky 13: New York Jets Joined By NHL Team For Longest Playoff Drought

Thanks to the Buffalo Sabres, the New York Jets are no longer sole owners of the longest playoff drought in American sports.

The NHL hockey team was officially eliminated from the playoffs this week, extending their own record streak to 13 games. As for all of American pro sports, the Sabres are now tied with, yep, the New York Jets.

Unlucky 13, indeed.

The Jets missed the playoffs again in 2023, thanks to quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffering a ruptured Achilles on the fourth snap of the season. They finished 7-10, getting officially eliminated from the postseason for the 13th consecutive season in a 30-0 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 17.

Behind the Jets, the Denver Broncos have the second-longest playoff drought in U.S. sports. They haven't made the postseason since winning Super Bowl 50 at the end of the 2015 season.

The last time the Jets made the playoffs was in 2010, when then-coach Rex Ryan guided Gang Green to their second consecutive AFC Championship Game appearance. Since then they have just one winning season.

With the return of Rodgers, additions of offensive free agents such as Tyron Smith and Mike Williams, and the 10th overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, the Jets hope to finally make the playoffs in 2024 and leave the Sabres in sole possession of the worst streak in American sports.
