Jets May Be Strongest Contender for HBO's 'Hard Knocks'

With fans awaiting the show announcement, Jets Country contributor examines why Gang Green should be the choice

The anticipation for the upcoming season of HBO's renowned documentary series, "Hard Knocks," is building as football enthusiasts eagerly await the announcement of the featured team.

The New York Jets appear to meet the NFL's unwritten selection criteria for eligible teams.

"Hard Knocks" Eligibility Guidelines

— Exemption for any team that has a first-year head coach

— Exemption if team has been featured on the HBO series in the last 10 years

— Exemption for teams who have had a playoff berth in the last two years

The Jets do not qualify for any of the three aforementioned exemptions and are eligible for selection as a result. The New Orleans Saints, Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears also fit the bill.

While the league's "Hard Knocks" announcement occurred in March last year, it is important to note that the timing shouldn't be a cause for concern. In fact, the 2021 team selection was made as late as July 2.

Let's delve into the exciting offseason the Jets have had, examining the factors that make them an intriguing choice for "Hard Knocks."

Jets' brass has been busy this spring, strategically reshaping the roster to build a title contender. With general manager Joe Douglas at the controls, the Jets have significantly bolstered their talent pool.

The Jets' most obvious draw is their acquisition of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. His presence in the New York media market alone adds an intriguing storyline for HBO show producers.

Rumors have circulated that Rodgers might be working behind the scenes to involve his good friend Pat McAfee in a guest producer role for the season.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport was a recent guest on the "Pat McAfee Show" and stated, “You know Aaron pretty well…if Hard Knocks comes, would he let them in?”

In response, McAfee punted to AJ Hawk who offered his assessment.

“I think there’s no telling," said Hawk. "I think he will let them all in or he will completely cut them off.”

While the speculation surrounding McAfee’s potential involvement remains just that —speculation — it adds an extra layer of potential drama for the documentary series.

"Hard Knocks" has long been cherished by fans as it provides an unprecedented look into the inner workings of an NFL franchise.

For the Jets, participation in the show would allow fans to forge a deeper connection with their beloved team. They would get an inside look at the inner sanctum of player-coach relationships, team dynamics, and the challenges faced both on and off the field. The transparent portrayal of the organization's efforts can foster trust and create a sense of unity among the fanbase.

Although training camp is fewer than two months away, there is still ample time for the league to finalize its decision. With their offseason infusion of talent, along with the presence of the cerebral Rodgers, the Jets seem like an ideal choice for the television series.

It's possible that HBO is taking extra time to make sure they have the right fit. It is in every party's best interest — the network, the NFL and the participating team — , to minimize distraction and optimize entertainment output.

Regardless of the selection outcome, Jets' fans eagerly await the start of the season, excited to witness the teaam's progression and potential rise to glory. Whether or not "Hard Knocks" comes along for the ride is the question.
