Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer Incites Dream of D-Hop Wearing Green & White

The NFL writer tackled the topic of a possible Jets' trade for receiver DeAndre Hopkins

The contents of Albert Breer's latest mailbag have sparked DeAndre Hopkins dreams amongst Gang Green faithful.

Answering fans' questions, the Sports Illustrated scribe selected a query stemming from the New York Jets' failed pursuit of free-agent receiver Odell Beckham.

Despite reportedly scheduling a meeting with Jets' brass, Beckham opted to sign the Baltimore Ravens' offer prior to embarking for his Florham Park visit.

The Beckham result won't move the Jets to alter their current off-season strategy, according to Breer.

"I think the Jets are going to do everything they can to go all in around Aaron Rodgers the way, say, the Buccaneers went all in around Tom Brady over the past three years, but they’ll try and do it with some intelligent restraint, as Tampa Bay did. The Odell Beckham Jr. case is a good one with which to illustrate that. The Jets were absolutely in on OBJ. They just weren’t in on him at $15 million for a single year," wrote Breer in response to a question about the possibility of Gang Green pursuing Hopkins in the wake of Beckham's decision.

Breer proceeded to indicate that Hopkins is due a hefty salary for the next two seasons.

A Jets' trade for Hopkins would have to happen in conjunction with a contract restructure and some creative salary cap maneuvering.

"DeAndre Hopkins is due $15.09 million in cash this year, and $19.45 million in cash next year. ... So if the Jets can get Hopkins to work with them on the money, I could certainly see this happening," concluded Breer.

Hopkins has been a dominant performer when healthy. Since the Houston Texans made the Clemson product a late-first-round pick in 2013, the 6-foot-1 Hopkins has made 853 catches for 11,298 receiving yards over a span of 145 regular season games.

Affectionately known as “Nuk,” the explosive receiver ranks 36th overall on the NFL’s all-time receiving list. Only one active player (Julio Jones) has amassed more career yards than Hopkins.

Hopkins went for 1,407 yards on 115 receptions in 2020, which was his last full season. Under contract with the Arizona Cardinals, he has missed 15 games total over the past two years.
