David Montgomery on Lions' O-Line: 'You Salivate a Little Bit'
The Detroit Lions' offensive line has gained quite the reputation across the National Football League.
New running back David Montgomery, who signed a three-year, $18 million contract, is aware of the elevated expectations for his new team this upcoming season. He was notified of such when he arrived for the first time at the team's Allen Park practice facility.
"To get the opportunity to come here and play with a team that's starting something crazy, being able to say that I could be a part of it, I'm blessed," said Montgomery during his introductory media session. "I'm feeling very, very excited to be able to get in an offense that's so powerful and dynamic."
Detroit's offensive line, which features multiple Pro Bowlers, takes pride in its ability to block for its quarterback and open up holes for running backs.
Montgomery told reporters he was salivating thinking about being able to run behind Detroit's offensive line.
"You salivate a little bit," Montgomery explained. "You get three Pro Bowlers on the O-line and them having high expectations for themselves and me having high expectations for myself. It could be really good. Being able to have a great room, being able to have Craig Reynolds be back here and Jermar (Jefferson). Being able to play with (D'Andre) Swift, too, will be nice. I came from a great running back room and I'm walking right back into one. So, I'm excited to kind of get around those guys and play football."
Not here to be Jamaal Williams
The newest member of the New Orleans Saints left an indelible mark with supporters over the past 24 months.
Jamaal Williams became a reliable option in the red zone in 2022, racking up 17 rushing touchdowns --a franchise record.
"Jamaal is a great player, a highly-decorated player," Montgomery said. "I'm not here to be him. I'm here to be me. I know I can bring a lot to the table. I don't want to be labeled as 'just can do this for a team or for the offense.' I want to be able to do everything. Whatever is being asked of me or what coach (Dan) Campbell asks me to do. Even coach (Scottie) Montgomery. Whatever they need from me, I'm down to do."
For Montgomery, he is ready and willing to do whatever is asked of him, even if that entails grabbing water for veteran quarterback Jared Goff.
"I'm here to be whoever coach Campbell and coach Ben (Johnson), whatever they need me to be, I'm here to be," said Montgomery. "If I need to go out there and pass protect, every play, I will do it. If I need to go play punt protect on a punt, I'll do it. If I need to play gunner, I'll do it. If Jared (Goff) needs some water, I'll give it to him. I'm just here to service the team and be whoever coach needs me to be."
