The Detroit Lions have made another splash signing in free agency.

One of the top free-agent defensive backs is now off the market, as the team has significantly bolstered its secondary

According to ESPN, the team has reached an agreement with defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

The deal is reportedly worth $8 million for one season.

After adding Cam Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley, the team has now secured the services of the former Philadelphia Eagles defensive back.

Opposing quarterbacks only recorded a 63.8 passer rating when targeting Gardner-Johnson last season.

What should be appealing to Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is the position flexibility that Gardner-Johnson brings. He's equipped to play both cornerback and safety.

Gardner-Johnson was traded to the Eagles from the New Orleans Saints during the 2022 preseason.

Along with former Lions defensive back Darius Slay, the addition quickly catapulted the Eagles' defense into one of the league's top units.

Last season, Detroit's secondary struggled mightily to start the season, resulting in the dismissal of defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant.

Glenn and the coaching staff have made it a priority to continue their search in finding physical, gritty defensive backs who can play in a heavy man coverage scheme.

The competition in the secondary should be quite compelling, as the team also has Jerry Jacobs and Jeff Okudah still on the roster.

At the safety spot, the team features Tracy Walker and the emerging Kerby Joseph, who oftentimes found himself near the football when his playing time increased.
