The Detroit Lions have not been too active in handing out long-term contracts to free agents since general manager Brad Holmes took the helm.

As the NFL world descends on Indianapolis for the combine, teams have started to announce players who will be released before the start of offseason workouts.

For the Lions, the opportunity now presents itself for the front office to revamp its defense by re-signing its own free agents and looking to bring on talented players who fit what the organization is looking for.

Currently, Holmes and Co. have $23 million in cap space available to target free agents.

But, the option is still there to add even more cap space by cutting high-priced veterans on both sides of the football.

With needs along the interior of the defensive line, linebacker and at cornerback, it is not out of the realm of possibility for the team to fill defensive needs with experienced veterans in free agency.

One Lions source expects the team to be more active this offseason, including the potential of signing more prominent players who will have an immediate impact.

Packers GM sheds light on Aaron Rodgers situation

Brian Gutekunst expressed to reporters on Tuesday he has yet to speak to future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers about his playing future or his future with the team.

During his media session, Gutekunst did express Jordan Love does need to see the playing field at this point in his career.

Gutekunst expressed, "I think, obviously, our feelings haven’t changed about Aaron, but we need to have some of those conversations about our team, where it’s going, where he’s at, before we go forward."

Gutekunst is excited about the potential of Love, 24, strongly competing to take Rodgers' job.

“We’re excited about him. I’ve expressed to a lot of people that he needs to play," Gutekunst said. “That’s the next step in his progression. He needs to play. Jordan’s done a great job working hard, so he’s doing everything we’re asking.”
