Saturday marked the second of three preseason games on the slate for the Detroit Lions.

Against the Washington Commanders, the Lions held out stars such as quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, tackle Penei Sewell, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, EDGE Aidan Hutchinson and linebacker Jack Campbell.

However, many of the team’s other starters got some reps early in the game. This included four of the five starters on the offensive line, minus Sewell. Head coach Dan Campbell outlined his plans for this group of players in a pregame interview with Lions flagship radio.

"I see our starters getting about a quarter, no more than that,” Campbell said. “Give them a good dose and let them play together. I think that's a big thing, let them play together and let them communicate. Let them learn each other's games a little bit inside the game. That'll be big for us."

Campbell explained the importance of logging this experience against an opposing team in a game setting. Particularly, he stressed the impact of going through the process and communicating against a different team after weeks of doing it against their defense in training camp.

“I think this is crucial for those guys to be able to do it in a real game,” Campbell explained. “To line up and get some meaningful snaps together, minus Penei. I think the secondary is important as well, to be able to communicate and the looks that they give us, we’re working with each other, we’re making the calls, we’re all on the same page. I think that’s big, and sometimes you can only get that in games.”
