Lions Expect Aidan Hutchinson to Be 'Calmer' against Washington

In this story:
The Detroit Lions' roster and coaching staff are both disappointed and encouraged following the Week 1 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles.
For defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, the objective this week will be to instill in the roster the significance of maintaining discipline and remaining true to assignments on any given defensive play call.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell indicated that players went "rogue" against the Eagles, and the results were quite punitive.
He explained earlier this week, "Our guys are watching it right now, and they’re seeing everything that we talked about and preached, and man, just do your job. Man, ‘You fit on the back, you fit on the back. I’m surfing off the edge, I’m surfing off the edge. I’m responsible for quarterback. Don’t even look at the running back.’ You just -- and literally just the trust and just hone in on your assignment."
On the Lions' first defensive play of the game, Hutchinson did not maintain his assignment with the design of the defensive play call.
"The first play of the game, he was after the quarterback when he had zone read. He should have just surfed," said Glenn. "But, he saw the opening, and he took off going."
Part of why the coaching staff enjoys the potential of the No. 2 pick is his ability to read and diagnose plays. At this point in time, though, it will be key for Hutchinson to understand the defensive play call and to execute his designed role.
"The thing is, man, when you get that guy going -- excited and now he's ready to go, and again, that was first game jitters," Glenn explained. "And then, he saw (an) opening. Man, I'm going to go make the play. And, that's the way Aidan is.
"Those are some of the things that we like about him, a lot of the things that we like about him. I think you will see him way more calmer," Glenn continued. "You'll see a guy that's going to do the things that Aidan has done all through camp. And, I will say, I'm not worried about that player. Not one bit. And, listen, every player is going to do that, because sometimes, your players will go make plays. And sometimes, you go out of character to do that every now and then. Now, you can't have that consistently. But, that's one player I'm not worried about. Not one bit."
