Packers-Chiefs Injury Report: Adams Says He Could Be Game-Time Decision

Davante Adams has his shoes picked out.
Now, the question is, when will he put them on for a game?
The Green Bay Packers’ star receiver said his injured toe is feeling “2 million times” better than it did after suffering the injury in the fourth quarter against Philadelphia on Sept. 26. By comparison, he said it was only 1 million times better last week. However, he didn’t practice for a second consecutive day and called himself a game-time decision for Sunday night’s game at Kansas City.
“I’m not playing with you guys or with any other team,” Adams said. “I’m trying every day to get back to where I was and I’m just not quite there yet. I’ve made a lot of progress. I got a lot of different things I couldn’t do at this point last week, so as it continues to heal, we’ll have more time, feeling better and better.”
On Wednesday, Adams went through the opening stretch with the team before heading into the Don Hutson Center with a trainer and a couple additional pairs of shoes. Having picked a pair of Nike Vapor Untouchables, a style he likes because “the top is a little more forgiving,” Adams again went through the opening stretch before retreating inside the Hutson Center.
Adams and center Corey Linsley (back) were the only players to not practice on Thursday. Rookie safety Darnell Savage, whose speed would be an obvious asset against the Chiefs’ fleet-footed receivers, was limited participation after missing the last two games with an injured ankle. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who had been limited the past five practices, was upgraded to full participation.
Pushing off and the full-speed routes are the biggest challenges for Adams – an obvious final barrier considering his job description. He had a scan after the injury but has not had another one and isn’t sure he’ll need another one to know if he’s ready to go.
“Honestly, as an athlete, you generally know,” Adams said. “Your body talks to you. You know the difference between something that’s hurting, sore vs. something that’s going to hurt you in the long run if you try to go really push off or something. I know the difference now how it feels vs. when it first happened. If I go to take a step and walk, it’s not going to hurt. But if I push off, I know that it may do some real damage. When it gets to the point where it’s just soreness – like a shoulder that gets bumped, it’s going to be sore when you touch it the next day but that doesn’t mean you’re going to tear your labrum.”
For the first time since the injury, Adams sounded optimistic about his chances of playing. He said he’s in a “good spot” but needs to keep progressing and the doctors to feel comfortable that there will not be a setback that would rewind the comeback clock.
“Every week, it’s going to get better,” he said. “It’s going to be a game-time decision this week. After that, I’ll be feeling more confident next week and I’ll get closer and closer. It’s not a game I’m playing with y’all. I just generally don’t know. I’ve got to feel it out and see. Sometimes, it takes to game day. Last week, it was a little more toward the end of the week [when] I could tell where we’re at. Now, I know it’s going to come up to that time where I’ll be like, ‘Hey, let’s rock.’ Or, ‘We’re going to shut it down.’ So, we’ll see.”
